21 Days of Skirts and Dresses – Day 21

Last day of dresses! This was probably one of my more fun challenges. This dress was actually a barn consignment find in a 70s/80s originals section. Since I’m not big on shopping, I really enjoy finding things. I happened to be at this barn picking up WWII era clothing for a documentary reenactment shoot and came across a couple dresses that worked for me as well. Random shopping finds are the best kind.

Now that the challenge is over I’m not necessarily planning on wearing dresses every day, that wasn’t the idea of this challenge. I am however, remembering that I do enjoy wearing dresses every now and then and will be switching up my wardrobe each week to incorporate a dress or two. Not to mention of course that I did recently acquire a handful more skirts and dresses so I don’t have much of an excuse not to.

Another challenge in the books!

Another of my roommate’s dresses, I love this one. The material is very soft and comfortable and it has pockets! You know how I feel about pockets.

I LOVE this skirt! It was yet again, another Goodwill find for $9.99. It’s a Banana Republic skirt and it’s this great thick material that kind of reminds me of a curtain. I’m not sure why, but that makes me love it even more. The reason it caught my eye at Goodwill is because for some reason it reminds me of something that my grandmother would wear. No matter where we were or what we were doing, I always remember her looking fantastic. Honestly I don’t know how she did it. I’m going to take this opportunity to share a few photos of my gorgeous grandmother.

21 Days of Skirts and Dresses – Day 17

Speaking of timeless, I feel that a simple pencil skirt is just something you need to have in your wardrobe. It’s one thing that made it out of the 80s and just keeps working. One thing that I did get questioned on however, are tights/pantyhose. Apparently that’s a trend that went away for a while? A coworker of mine mentioned it to me and since I am not exactly up on fashion I did a little research and found a lot of fashion posts about this. It seems that the world has decided that pantyhose are outdated and out of style and it was a big deal in 2011 when Kate Middleton started heading out in public wearing pairs of nude pantyhose: PEOPLE: Is Kate Bringing Back Sheer Pantyhose? (what?? this was news??).

Needless to say I never heard that pantyhose were out of fashion and I really don’t care for several reasons:

  1. I don’t work in fashion and probably won’t, unless it’s fashion that involves yoga pants and/or sweat pants.
  2. I like what pantyhose cover, it smooths out my legs, you don’t see any stubble or my nasty scar from a vigorous game of hide and seek when I was 13.
  3. Pantyhose stop chafing from happening and this my friend, is an all caps WIN.
  4. And they make me feel classier when wearing skirts or dresses in situations that don’t involve a beer garden, beach, or backyard BBQ.

There you have it kids, I’m going to keep wearing pantyhose and you should do. I won’t let them die.

Day 16 – one of my go to business type dresses! This is actually from H&M and may be one of the best quality items I’ve actually ever bought from H&M haha. I’ve had this for several years and feel it’s one of those timeless dresses I can wear for any nice or business type occasion.

Cool weather + comfy dress + awkward pose = who cares, I’m comfortable.

I was so excited to see the weather actually cooled down! It’s been in the 90s and humid in Austin, which I don’t mind, but I did want to wear this long sleeve dress at least one more time before summer. It’s from Francesca’s and it’s one of my favorites. Francesca’s is one of those stores that I could just buy everything in. Which is also why I avoid it to the best of my ability.

Posing for photos is exhausting apparently.

Today was a lazy, comfortable, no makeup kind of day. Thanks to my roommate for letting me borrow some fantastic dresses. This was a perfect Saturday dress.

If yesterday was a day in the 80s then today is a day in the 90s! I’m so very happy that flower patterns are back in style because it’s one of my favorite patterns. There are few things better than small flower print sundresses. Sweatpants are probably one of the only things better when it comes to my wardrobe actually.

21 Days of Skirts and Dresses – Day 12

I went loud and bold today! Hello fun bright tights. I think today is the first time I’ve worn these since buying them, maybe five years ago. Sometimes it’s fun to push my comfort level and wear things I wouldn’t normally wear. I was told several times that I look very ’80s today. I’m ok with that. I need to represent my decade.

21 Days of Skirts and Dresses – Day 11

The more great reactions I get on my Goodwill finds the more convinced I am to only shop there for clothes. I mean really though, why not? This is another find, $9.99 at Goodwill. When I was young we shopped at second hand stores and I remember having a fun time running around as my mom looked for various clothes. I’m sure my sister can agree, stopping there was an adventure every time.

I’m new to really understanding Goodwill and the second hand game, however I did notice a couple things that I can pass along as tips:

  1. Go to a Goodwill in a nice area. I’ve been to plenty of second hand stores and have never found the amount of awesome items that I found in this last trip. This specific Goodwill was in a great area of Austin and it was a nice, clean, large location. From here on out I’ll be scouting out neighborhoods and second hand stores.
  2. Go early. I went first thing on a Saturday morning to avoid the crowds. There were only a few people in the store with me when I got there and that was nice. By the time I was done trying on a cart full of clothes there was already a crowd at the store, but I found what I wanted and I was out of there. I’ve read a few bloggers say that Mondays are a good morning to go after everyone’s cleaned out their closets and yard sales. I’ll be giving that a shot next time around.

Any other great second hand shopping tips? Now that I’ve discovered good finds, I want to make sure I continue with this luck!
